Our Interdisciplinary Team & Assessments
Concussion management at KHS is delivered by an experienced interdisciplinary team that may include physiotherapists, occupational therapists, athletic therapists, and kinesiologists. Depending on the patient’s needs, comprehensive assessments use standardized tools to evaluate symptoms, balance, coordination, vision, cognition, and physical tolerance — across clinical, neurocognitive, and functional domains.
We utilize advanced tools for Baseline and Post-Injury Testing:
- IMPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion and Cognitive Testing): The most widely used and most scientifically validated computerized concussion management tool available. It can be completed as a baseline and/or post-injury assessment for children and adults.
- SWAY: The Sway Balance Test is an FDA-cleared mobile balance testing system that reinvents the way patients and athletes are monitored for signs of balance-related dysfunction.
Personalized Rehabilitation
Following assessment, individualized rehabilitation programs are developed to address each patient’s specific areas of impairment. Programming includes education and appropriate rehabilitation in the spheres of deficiency, such as:
- Graded return to work, school, and important life role activities
- Cognitive rehabilitation
- Vestibular therapy — balance and dizziness management
- Ocular-motor and vision therapy
- Exertion-based therapy and progressive conditioning
- Manual therapy for associated neck and musculoskeletal symptoms
- Education and symptom management strategies
Our structured, step-by-step approach ensures recovery progresses safely while reducing the risk of prolonged symptoms or re-injury.
Collaborative Care and Referrals
We offer comprehensive care, including specialized physician support. Sports Medicine Physician Dr. David Little accepts referrals for sports-related concussions.
Where additional specialized services are needed beyond the scope of our clinic, we work collaboratively with the patient’s family physician to coordinate referrals to psychology or psychiatry, neurology, ophthalmology, or neuro-ophthalmology as appropriate. This coordinated approach ensures every patient receives the complete care they need throughout recovery.
