The completed Hall Street Pier Replacement project for the City of Nelson was a major marine infrastructure upgrade located on the West Arm of Kootenay Lake. The primary scope of work involved the deconstruction and safe disposal of the existing wooden pier, which included removing the substructure, decking, railings, and approximately 100 creosote-treated timber piles. Following the demolition, a new, enlarged pier supported by open-end steel pipe piles was constructed. The newly built pier features enhanced amenities, including an extensive structural steel and wood timber framework, newly installed floating docks, gangways, a glulam wood exterior canopy, and an enclosure for a display.
NMC managed the overall execution, budget coordination, and site logistics for the project. While overseeing specialized subcontractors for major phases—such as Graham Marine for the demolition and steel pile installation, and Spearhead for the glulam canopy—NMC also executed specific scopes of work using its own personnel. NMC utilized its “own forces” to complete the structural concrete formwork, supply 85% of the framing labour, and handle site housekeeping throughout the duration of the construction. Additionally, NMC was responsible for maintaining temporary site facilities, access roads, and site security to ensure the project ran smoothly and safely.
